Speakers biographies: 
Lisa Richardson practices General Internal Medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and is the Associate Dean, Inclusion and Diversity; as well as Acting Vice Dean, Strategy, at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine. She is an education researcher at the Wilson Centre with a scholarly focus on how to integrate Indigenous and critical perspectives from the social sciences into medical education. Dr Richardson is the Strategic Lead in Indigenous Health for Women’s College Hospital where she founded Ganawishkadawe – The Centre for Wise Practices in Indigenous Health. She is on Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and co-chairs the Royal College’s Indigenous Health Committee. Lisa is also a founding executive member of the National Consortium for Indigenous Medical Education and belongs to the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada.
 
Karey M. Sutton is the Scientific Director for Health Equity Research at the MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). She is responsible for advancing the overall health equity research strategy, which investigates health disparities in patient safety, patient engagement, maternal health, diagnostics, and chronic disease management. Motivated by her lived experience, Dr. Sutton’s work has focused on the methodological, ethical, and practical issues faced by the mandated inclusion of racial and ethnic minorities in research. She has examined biobanking governance perspectives among historically marginalized communities. The tenets of community engagement, a cornerstone of her expertise, guide her research approach to building meaningful partnerships with patients from historically marginalized communities, community-based organizations, and other multi-sector partners. Before joining MHRI, Dr. Sutton was a Research Director at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Center for Health Justice. She helped build member institutions’ capacity to conduct solutions-focused health equity research there. She was named one of the National Minority Quality Forum’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health, an award recognizing thought leaders in minority health nationwide whose work focuses on reducing health and healthcare disparities. Sutton received undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Classical Civilization from Howard University and a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Policy from Virginia Tech.
 
Kelly Smith (moderator) is the inaugural Michael Garron Chair in Patient Oriented Research at the Michael Garron Hospital and Associate Professor and Co-program Lead for Outcomes & Evaluation in the Institute of Health Policy, Management, & Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on coproducing practical solutions to challenges of healthcare delivery with a focus on patient safety and quality improvement. Dr. Smith is a leading investigator in patient-oriented research, forging partnerships with patients to codesign research and innovations to improve the quality and safety of healthcare delivery. Dr. Smith has led large scale implementation and evaluation projects for clinics, hospitals, health centers, and health systems across the U.S. that aim to better integrate evidence into practice.
