Optimizing the intersections across QI and Continuing Professional Development

Session Description: 

This presentation will focus on the intersections and partnerships that may occur across the domains of QI, continuing education and continuing professional development that would advance their shared goals of improving healthcare practices and outcomes. In this presentation, we will: (1) Draw upon our research about continuing education and QI to illuminate how QI leads can more fully maximize continuing education evidence and theory to advance QI initiatives and (2) Present a case study from Kaiser Permanente Health Colorado that exemplifies how continuing professional development leads can more systematically align with institutional QI priorities and methods.

Speaker Biography: 

Dr. Joanne Goldman, PhD is a Scientist at the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and at the Wilson Centre, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, and has an appointment at the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto. Joanne’s research program spans the fields of quality and safety of healthcare, continuing professional development, and interprofessional education and practice. She uses qualitative research and scoping reviews in her examination of topics at the intersections of these fields.

Sharisse Arnold Rehring, MD, FAAP received her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and is a practicing pediatrician for the Colorado Permanente Medical Group (CPMG). She is the Director of Medical Education and the Director of Pediatric Education for CPMG. She is the Director of the Kaiser Permanente Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship with the University of Colorado School of Medicine (KP LIC). She is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and has served on the Medical Board of Directors, and the Clinical Faculty Affairs Committee at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She is currently Director of Continuing Education for the CO Chapter of the AAP, is on the AAP Committee on CME, the Board of Directors for ACCME, the Council of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Academy of Medical Educators at CUSOM and the National CME Committee for KP.  Her passion is integrating educational interventions at point of care to create efficiencies, eliminate unnecessary practice variation and improve the value and quality of care delivered to patients across the organization. Studying educational outcomes in collaboration with the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute for Health Research is an integral component to her work.
