SUMMARY:2026 - Designing Safer Systems: Leveraging High-Impact Interventions and Human Factors
DESCRIPTION:Designing Safer Systems: Leveraging High-Impact Interventions and Human Factors \nThis course explores how to apply the hierarchy of effectiveness to design safer healthcare systems. Through case studies and interactive activities\, participants will learn to create high-leverage interventions that prioritize safety and usability using Human Factors principles and methods. \nLearning Objectives: \n·         Understand the principles of the hierarchy of effectiveness and how to apply them when designing interventions. \n·         Adopt a systems approach and recognize the role of human factors in system design and safety \n·         Analyze case studies to identify strengths\, weaknesses\, and areas for improvement\, with a focus on simplifying processes and avoiding education-only interventions \n·         Use Quality Improvement (QI) and human factors methods\, such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and usability testing\, to test and refine interventions \nDate and time: \n\nThursday\, April 9th 2026 12-3:30pm. ET\n\nCost: \n\n$400 – non-members\n$300 – CQUIPS+ members (25% discount!)\n\n\nSpeakers: \nMegan Hamilton is a Performance Improvement Specialist at Sunnybrook. Her areas of expertise are human factors engineering and the optimization and design of complex health systems and processes. She holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification from the University of Toronto and earned her MHSc in Clinical Engineering from the same institution. Megan applies systems thinking and human-centered design principles to support safe care and streamline operations. \nGenny Ng is the Manager of Quality & Patient Safety and Co-Chair of the Green Task Force at Sunnybrook. In her role\, she oversees accreditation preparations\, and leads quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care. As Co-Chair of the Green Task Force\, Genny oversees a number of sustainability initiatives. Genny has over 15 years of healthcare experience\, prior to joining the Quality & Patient Safety department\, Genny worked as a Respiratory Therapist in the ICU.
